Antioxidant Facts And The Role Of Resveratrol
The world today is full of antioxidants- sodas, cereals, yogurt, pills, juices and supplements among many others. What does antioxidant mean and what is it? It means fighting, against oxidation. An antioxidant therefore decelerates and inhibits the oxidation of other chemicals. Nutritionally, oxidation means a certain compound or group of molecules fighting free radicals to prevent their damaging effects. It is important to note that oxidation is not bad to some extend, i.e. oxidation is the interaction of oxygen molecules and those of other substances. Its destructive effect is what is not good.
For instance, when iron and oxygen come together, oxygen takes electrons from iron and as a result weakens it, which is what leads to rusting. Thus, if oxidation is both good and bad, why would we need antioxidants? The answer is simple, oxygen being both the breath of life and death, the free radicals that exist in the air will cause oxidation when you breathe in, hence killing thousands of molecules. Scientifically, this is how the aging process occurs in the human body.
The skin cells will be destroyed, making the skin appear dry, less elastic and full of wrinkles. When the cells in the body are damaged on the other hand, they cannot be able to eliminate waste as supposed to, leading to cancer, heart complications and cardiovascular disease among many others. The role of antioxidants, like those found in resveratrol, will guard the body from this damage by neutralizing free radicals and oxygen, actually, they contain an extra lone electron that they release to free radicals and oxygen, hence stopping the destruction.
That said, it is imperative to know that the foods that you consume contain less antioxidants to be able to fight free radicals and oxygen effectively and keep your body free from diseases and aging. You should therefore consider a daily rich antioxidant supplement.
