Ocoee Chiropractic Doctor Aids Locals In Easing Up Pain Due To Sports Injuries

Sports chiropractic and chiropractic rehabilitation have generated a lot of attention due to the growing number of sports celebrities using this form of treatment. Ocoee Chiropractic can help athletes and people active in sports manage sports-related injuries effectively.

Injuries are at times unavoidable especially if the athletes is exposed to constant training. Overextending oneself in fitness and athletics endeavors could happen. The training could push the player to the limits of physical endurance causing muscles or nerves to strain. Consequently, injuries or disorders could become a bygone conclusion. This is why chiropractic care is necessary.

The basic tenet in chiropractic health care is focused on the 209 bones and skeletal make up of human body. Muscles, tendons, ligaments and tissues all form part of the human skeletal system. Each bone joined by joint can move. These movements could possibly lead to subluxation or spine misalignment in bones.

Since athletes training require a lot of movement, spine misalignment and deviation from its normal position is bound to happen at some point. Sports injuries are one causes of spine misalignment. The subluxation problem could result in aches or inflammation on the athletes muscles or nerves. Common signs and symptoms of injury in sports are muscle spasms, constrained movement of joints and pain.

Chiropractic intervention treats subluxation arising from sports injury by hands on manipulation or spinal adjustments on these nerves. The end goal of a chiropractor in the treatment is to eliminate nerve disorders and restore the normal functioning of the body. The manipulations can stimulate the self-healing capacity of human body. This rejuvenating capabilities of human body mixed with chiropractic care will treat the athlete from sports injuries.

The spine is the part of mans body that is susceptible to dislocation. But in most cases sports injury that affect the spine only represents a mere 3 percent of total injury cases. Affected areas in sports-related injury are in the surrounding nerves such as hands, legs and shoulders.

Ocoee chiropractic treatment is able to concentrate on spine so it will function at optimum level. The branching of nerves in spine can cause pain to be felt in all parts of the body. This is the reason why sometimes disabilities in arms and legs can be alleviated by treating the spine.

When you search the Internet and want a Ocoee Chiropractic, you can find a local listings of the doctors in that area that can help. Http://www.centralfloridarehab.com

Migraines

Stress, sleep deprivation and fatigue have been no small component of Dr. Michael Benson’s life. As a fetal surgeon, Dr. Benson is often up for 24- to 36-hour stretches at a time looking after patients. He has little time to rest or eat regular, healthy meals. It’s no wonder he has suffered from migraines for years.

Benson is not alone. It’s estimated that 28 million Americans suffer from migraines. As anyone who experiences these intense headaches can tell you, they can be extremely debilitating. Acute pain, possible visual disturbances and nausea, as well as sensitivity to light, sounds and odors can render a person incapable of going about everyday responsibilities, much less performing complicated tasks like surgery.

In order to cope, Benson has used Ibuprofen and heat to manage the pain, but sometimes it does not work. “I used to keep a preloaded syringe of Toradol [a strong, anti-inflammatory pain reliever] in my medicine chest,” he admits, “because once my headaches get really bad, I get nauseated and can’t take anything by mouth. It saved having to go to the ER.”

Having trained as an M.D., Benson confessed that chiropractic treatment was not in his knowledgebase or on his immediate list of pain-relieving measures. In fact, if he hadn’t been visiting his brother, a doctor of chiropractic, when a bad migraine hit, he may never have received chiropractic care. “The Ibuprofen didn’t work, so my brother offered to examine me and adjust my neck,” he says. “When you’re in pain, you’re willing to try anything.” Within 10 to 15 minutes of the adjustment, his migraine had disappeared.

It is likely that Benson’s body reacts to stress by tensing muscles around the cervical joints in the neck, causing nerves in his neck to become impinged and triggering his migraines. Chiropractic adjustment alleviates this pain by relaxing muscles and promoting a full range of motion in the neck, allowing the headache to subside. And Benson’s positive experience isn’t uncommon. Recent studies at Duke University found that spinal manipulation was almost always immediately effective in relieving headaches originating in the neck and provided longer-lasting relief than commonly prescribed pain medications.

Benson’s migraines probably won’t go away completely without substantial lifestyle changes- changes that could be tough to implement with his profession. Once migraines are an established pattern, they are very difficult to get rid of, explains his brother. But he can work to minimize them with chiropractic care- a solution that doesn’t carry the potential side-effects of over-the-counter and prescription pain medication. Whenever a potentially incapacitating migraine hits and Benson gets an adjustment from his brother, “It always works,” he says.

Chiropractic Care: A Surprising Solution to Your Allergy Symptoms

If you suffer from allergies, no one needs to tell you how miserable they can make even the most simple activities in life. An outing in the park, a yarn-toss with Kitty, shrimp on the barbie, or an inadvertent encounter with Mr. Peanut, can produce uncontrollable sneezing, a runny nose, itchy eyes, or a skin rash.

However, sometimes a person’s allergic reactions can go from just plain irritating to dangerous and life-threatening as the air passageway constricts and breathing becomes a problem. This progression of symptoms can frequently produce a state of panic.

In fact, if you have incessant allergies, it may seem that, from time-to-time, your environment is a very unfriendly place and that the world around you is, in deed, out to get you!

There is a reason why your body, and the body of other allergy sufferers, react so intensely to the elements in the environment, while others seem to be unaffected. Allergic responses are caused by a hyperactive immune system that “freaks out” when confronted with commonplace foods and other particles such as pollen, dander, shellfish, or nuts.

Have you been wondering if your chiropractor can help with your allergies? The fact is that quite a few people notice relief from allergy symptoms after getting chiropractic treatment. The reason why, however, may surprise you because chiropractors don’t actually treat allergies.

This relief occurs because chiropractic adjustments affect the whole nervous system, including the auto-immune system. When there’s a disruption in the nervous system, in conjunction with other problems, the autoimmune system, whose responsibility it is to assist you in adapting and responding appropriately to your environment, can become under-active or overactive. The problem is the latter (overactive) when it comes to your allergies.

Since chiropractic manipulations decrease or eliminate disturbances in the nervous system and bring back balance and harmony to the body, the adjustments bring that same homeostasis to the auto-immune system as well. A vital immune system reacts appropriately to commonly named allergens in the environment.

So, there you go, the “mystery” is solved: Your chiropractor doesn’t treat allergies, per se, but your allergy symptoms will likely respond, nonetheless. The ease from your allergies is simply a recognizable part of a well-adjusted nervous system. See your chiropractor, today, to find out if chiropractic adjustments can help you feel a whole lot better, no matter where you go or what you encounter.

Headaches – Not Just In Your Head

Everyone gets the occasional headache, but some headaches get so bad they won’t go away. While drugs treat the symptoms, they often ignore the underlying cause of the problem.

Many of the more severe headache symptoms are slow to respond to chemical treatment, which when made more intense to address the headache, can have long lasting and often negative effects to the body when used over time. This is why many people with chronic head pain look to the more natural (and very often the more effective alternative) solution of chiropractic care.

Some Types of Headaches

In order to better treat any type of condition, it is first important to try to understand what is causing the problem. Since there are many different types of headaches, some can be treated better by chiropractic than some of the others. Headaches can be caused by

-changes in vascular constriction

-muscle tension

-congestion of the sinuses

These headaches can refer or radiate pain all over your head and they can feel like they’re centered in many different locations, but it is most important to realize that chiropractic seems to work best in the types of headaches that are based around muscle tension and changes to vascular flow. Sinus headaches have also had success, but they are likely to have a more complicated cause.

The three main types of headaches most often found in chiropractic offices are:

-migraine headaches

-tension headaches

-Cervicogenic headaches (headaches from the neck)

The last kind of headache mentioned can sound a bit scary, but cervicogenic means a headache that is being caused by the bones, muscles, or nerves of neck.

Tension Headaches

If we become stressed, scared, or angry, your body will respond with increased muscle tension in the head, neck, and shoulders. This reaction is called the fight or flight response, and it is the normal response to stress. If we are stressed often (as most of us are) and we can neither run or fight, the muscle tension becomes a habit.

This can lead to some imbalances in the way we hold our body, which in turn leads to more muscle tension and pain. Chiropractic treatment can relax these muscles and realign the spine’s structure to put and end to the vicious cycle of pain. Those seeking chiropractic care for tension headaches can often see a marked improvement in just a few treatments as the nerves become less irritated and the muscles begin to relax.

Migraine Headaches

Migraines are brought about by changes in vascular flow, triggered by a variety of factors such as different smells, foods, weather, hormonal changes, and stress. These often very painful headaches do not always start off as pain. They can begin with nausea or the person may experience a halo effect called a visual aura.

Recent studies have shown chiropractic treatment may play a significant role in reducing the number of migraines a person has. By careful manipulation of the neck and spine, chiropractic adjustments may be able to reduce nerve irritation in the spine, thus preventing radiating or referred pain, and improve vascular flow.

Treatment

Chiropractic care centers around manipulation of the spine and neck to improve blood flow and posture. To reduce the headaches, the chiropractor will perform spinal adjustments using his hands, but may also include massage, trigger point therapy, or other types of complementary treatments to address the problem. The doctor of chiropractic will probably also include some home care recommendations such as stretching exercises and posture education to help keep things balanced between visits.

Your Feet Were Made For Walking, So Why Do They Hurt?

Santa Barbara Chiropractor gets rid of foot pain!

We all know that movement is beneficial for every part of body, right? In fact, our overall good health is highly influenced by our getting regular physical exercise. If that’s the case, why do so many individuals suffer from aches and pains in their feet? After all, our feet are made for walking, aren’t they? Yes, but they aren’t made for exploitation.

A physically fit individual generally takes between three and five thousand steps daily, excluding aerobic exercises or running. Unfortunately, all too frequently this, otherwise healthy, number of steps is made by individuals with unhealthy walking postures and clumsy gait patterns.

In addition, a significant number of individuals wear inadequately-designed, poorly-fitting shoes. Walking, and exercising, on feet that are inhibited from moving as they were meant to cannot help but to produce painful problems not only in a variety of places in the feet, but in other parts of the body, as well. For instance, if an individual over-pronates (walks like a duck) in shoes that are badly-made, are worn unevenly, or have high heels, that person will likely have challenges in the back, knees and legs, as well as problems in the foot and ankle.

The most commonplace foot problem is Plantar Fascitis (heel pain), which is most frequently produced by inflammation of the plantar fascia. The healthy function of the plantar fascia is crucial for pain-free walking and exercise. The plantar fascia is a superbly-made, multi-tasking band of connective tissue that encompasses the muscles on the bottom of the foot, adheres the heel bone to the ball of the foot, sustains the arch, shields the foot, and absorbs shock.

There are many factors that contribute to the development of Plantar Fascitis. One factor is short and tight calf muscles. When calf muscles get short and tight they exert a strong pull on the back of the heel bone, producing undue stress on the smaller and weaker plantar muscles and fascia. What causes calf muscles to get short and tight? In addition to running and jumping activities such as aerobics, volleyball, running, basketball, and tennis, the wearing of high heels can create the problem.

Other elements that can be instrumental in producing Plantar Fascitis include sudden effortful activity after a period of extended inactivity, walking on hard or uneven surfaces (barefooted, in particular), abnormal movement patterns (such as over-pronation), inappropriate footwear, and obesity.

Once developed, Plantar Fascitis is frequently not easy to manage and can become intensely painful and tenacious. Without proper attention, Plantar Fascitis will only get worse.

If you are suffering from heel pain, your chiropractor will be able to establish the reason for your problem and what chiropractic therapies would be best suited. Treatment might include ultrasound therapy, laser, joint manipulation, Graston technique, muscle stretching and strengthening exercises, kinesio taping and, in some cases, orthotics.

What Can You Do About Sleep Disorders Due To Back Pain?

Do you need a good night’s sleep? Have you been up most of the night because of back pain? You may have insomnia because of your back pain. I personally have treated many patients that were suffering from this problem. I can tell you that I have treated thousands of patients for back pain, and prior to seeing them many had tried everything they could think of to get comfortable. Some patients have told me it had gotten to the point they are literally praying for sleep, because they had their sleep ruined due to back pain.

It is not unusual for people to sleep on the floor or put a board under mattress. They will buy body-pillows to prop up their legs or place between their knees. They try all types of pillows: memory pillows, contour pillows or even expensive down pillows. It could drive a spouse crazy because back pain sufferers often lay awake at night channel-surfing and ordering products from infomercials. They might buy sleeping aids, inversion tables, Ginsu knives, diet programs, and exercise programs, just to list a few. And it is understandable, as they are really ordering the promise of the hope to get better. It is a never-ending cycle with back pain and not sleeping. Many try heating pads, electric blankets, and soothing music.

Many people have tried heating pads, electric blankets, playing soothing music, and leaving the television on – which can drive a spouse insane. They want to have some company while they are awake suffering. This is when back pain sufferers are tempted to order products from the late-night infomercials: diet programs, sleep aids, exercise equipment, inversion tables, vitamins and maybe even Ginsu knives. Anything that will promise a better life might be ordered. It is a viscous cycle that just does not seem to end because their pain is only the symptom of what could be a serious, underlying back problem.

There are temporary reasons for back pain. An example is a pregnant woman. Her back pain can be because of so much extra weight around her mid- section during the day. The same thing can happen from being overweight. Other reasons could be improper carrying to one side, anything from a heavy purse to a child riding on the hip, improper sitting, sitting while leaning and peering at a computer screen. The list goes on, because of our more sedentary lives.

If the pills do not help you, on the next visit when you see your doctor, he or she will probably tell you to go to a physical therapist. If you are still in pain, when you go back to your doctor again, then you may get to have X-rays or MRIs to figure the actual diagnosis and exactly what is wrong. If you are diagnosed with a herniated disc or degenerative disc disease, you may be referred to an orthopedic specialist or a neurologist. At that point, they could recommend having an injection (epidural) which may help short-term: two months, two weeks, two days, or not at all.

Initially, many doctors hesitate to put too much time into diagnosing and just list your pain as “nonspecific” back pain. After the X-rays or MRIs are read, then you find out what your problem is during your next visit to the doctor. Should you have a condition such as a herniated disc or degenerative disc, or others such as spinal stenosis and facet syndrome, you most likely will be scheduled for a visit to a specialist – an orthopedic or a neurologist. At that point, it may be time for a spinal epidural, which most likely will not help for any length of time, or may not help at all. Or, surgery may be recommended.

There may come a point, where your specialist recommends back surgery. Some surgeries are successful – while others are not, and without saying, these patients are extremely disappointed. If you need to continue to take pain medications long-term, then you will be under the care of a pain specialist. At this point, you would have a diagnosis of “failed surgery syndrome”.

The Twin Medical Monsters

Like Scylla and Charybdis, the twin sea monsters of Greek mythology, diabetes and obesity are the twin medical monsters confronting America’s children. Diabetes and obesity have even been featured as the story line in a recent episode of Law … Order, a show well-known for focusing on issues that matter.

What’s going on? Diabetes and obesity are twin raging epidemics endangering the health and welfare of our nation’s young people. In New York City, by the age of 4, there is a one in three chance that the child will be obese. More than 40% of children are at an unhealthy weight at ages 2 and 3.1 National statistics are similar.

Type II diabetes, long known as “adult-onset diabetes”, is now being recognized as a significant juvenile disorder. Up to 45% of the children diagnosed with diabetes have the type II form.2 And the numbers keep increasing.

Type II diabetes and obesity are closely related. And being overweight is one of the two major risk factors for developing type II diabetes. The other major risk factor, not surprisingly, is lack of exercise – not being physically active.

Why should we be concerned? Both diabetes and obesity contribute to additional severe health issues. Obesity is the leading cause of pediatric high blood pressure and increases the risk of coronary heart disease. Uncontrolled diabetes, over time, can lead to heart disease, kidney disease, neurologic disorders, and blindness.

So we are very concerned for our children’s well-being. The good news – and it is very good news – is both conditions are lifestyle-related. Bad diet and lack of exercise cause both conditions. This is well-known. It is also well-known that maintaining a healthy diet and getting regular exercise prevents obesity and prevents or delays type II diabetes.3,4

As parents, it’s up to us to set the standards. If we’re eating healthy, balanced meals, our kids will do the same. If we exercise regularly and keep ourselves fit and trim, our kids will exercise regularly, too.

Dealing With Arthritis

We’ve all seen the TV ads ” nice-looking woman in her fifties, sitting on a nice sofa in a nice living room, rubbing her hands, in obvious pain. Of course, she’s not Lady Macbeth, trying to rub off the imagined blood of her murdered husband. She’s a woman with arthritis.

According to the Center for Disease Control, arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the United States.1 Approximately 47 million people have doctor diagnosed arthritis and 17 million have arthritis-attributable activity limitations.

Osteoarthritis, the most common form, is a degenerative condition affecting the joints and the soft tissues around the joints ” the associated cartilage, ligaments, and tendons. The most commonly affected areas are the spine, the hands, and the shoulders, hips, and knees. The pain of arthritis, the reduced mobility, and the lifestyle accommodations needed for pain avoidance are discouraging and may even lead to depression.

Anti-inflammatory drugs are available for the treatment of arthritis, and in recent years many of these have been found to cause severe side effects. Vioxx is the most notorious of these ” cardiovascular complications caused a worldwide recall of the drug. Celebrex, another well-known arthritis medication, was also found to increase the risk of heart attack and stroke at high doses.

The very good news is there are several wellness-based treatment alternatives to long-term medication. These include exercise, diet, and in many cases, chiropractic treatment.

Exercise is critical in restoring mobility and, over time, in reducing pain.2,3 Persons with osteoarthritis often experience a vicious cycle of deteriorating symptoms. Pain can cause reduced mobility (pain avoidance), which (paradoxically) actually causes more pain, which causes further reductions of mobility . . . . Activities of daily living ” getting out of a chair, opening a jar, bending and lifting ” become a real challenge as the person struggles to avoid further pain.

So, restoring mobility is key. Exercise done very gently at first ” is the answer. Range-of-motion activities to get the joints moving again are very beneficial, including Arm circles Wrist circles Shoulder shrugs Side-to-side bending for the lower back Gentle knee bends Ankle circles Flexing and pointing the feet

Walking is a perfect exercise for treatment of arthritis. Begin by walking one block, then two, then around the block. Walk five minutes daily for a week, then increase by a minute or two each day. Get up to 15 minutes of gentle walking, and then begin to gradually increase your pace. The increased mobility will not only reduce pain, but also provide a cardiovascular benefit and improve one’s ability to perform activities of daily living.

Chiropractic treatment, in combination with an exercise program, may assist in restoring joint mobility and reducing pain. Gentle chiropractic manipulative therapy is designed to improve mobility of spinal joints. As spinal joint motion improves, pain lessens, and a positive cycle of return-to-function begins.
