Tips To Improve Your Golf Swing: Rotating Your Hands Through The Ball At The Point Of Impact

Getting into the perfect position at the point of impact is a very important step within the golf swing. The angle of the club face will determine whether you hit the ball straight or in some other direction that you don’t want it to go. Now grab a club and swing it as you normally would. Pay attention to the position of your hands and forearms at the point of impact. This is what we are going to focus on.

Alright, get back into the impact position, acting like you are about to hit the golf ball. Now…. one thing we want to focus on is keeping our wrists straight and not letting them bend to the left or right at impact. Bending your wrists is known as a “wrist break” in the golf world, and it is not something that we want. A wrist break at impact will most likely cause a slice. However, what you do want is to “flip” your hands through the ball at impact. So, how do we learn how to do this? This little exercise should help you out with that….

The Wrist Watch Exercise

Ok, the easiest way for us to learn the proper form is if we can see the correct moves to make. This can be done easily with a simple wrist watch. So, go grab one…

Ok, Do you have your watch? Now, as your leading arm comes into the impact zone, the watch face should be facing your target, which will more than likely be the flag. At the point of impact, ROTATE your wrists and forearms so the watch face is pointing at the ground. This movement will also make your trailing wrist and forearm “flip” on top of your leading wrist and forearm. Continue to practice this movement until it feels completely natural within your golf swing.

Rotating your wrists through the ball at impact will “close” your club face and will result in greater distance and a reduced slice. This will benefit any golfer.

While you are trying to master this golf swing tip, you need to make sure your forearms are working together. Your forearms should be as close to one another as possible through the impact zone. If you can implement this simple technique you will benefit from longer, straighter shots, and a lower golf score :)

That can be the confusing thing about golf. There is more than one way to swing a club. However, what we need to figure out is which instruction is correct for YOUR swing. So, let’s get started…

Golf instructors are constantly trying to determine whether the one plane or two plane golf swing is better. This debate will probably continue on forever because there are professionals on the pro tour that use each type of swing.

For example, some of the one plane golfers include: Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Chad Campbell and Scott McCarron. These golfers swing their club around their bodies on a more flat plane which helps them keep their shoulders in line at the top of the swing.

On the other side of the spectrum we have the golfers who use the two plane golf swing. They use a swinging pattern that is more upright. At the top of their swing their left arm is much steeper than their shoulders. Some of the golf professionals who use the two plane approach include Jack Nicklaus, Colin Montgomerie, Hale Irwin, and Sean O’Hair.

The two types of golfers that we just mentioned have to focus on two entirely different principles for their swings. These principles are pretty much opposites of each other and that is why we get a lot of conflicting information from golf instructors on how we should swing a golf club.
